MR (Mendip Rail) 59001 stands at Reading on 23/08/2001.
The class 59s were the first General Motors locos to grace the UK's shores, and seem to have been a success - with the possible exception of 003 being packed off to Germany. They employ a GM16-645 engine, the 16 cylinder version of the engine in a 57, and have made the Westbury stone traffic their own in a way not seen since the demise of the Westerns.
